| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Spinal cord injured (SCI) patients often have cardio-vascular problems due to venous pooling in the lower extremities when they are transferred from the horizontal to the upright position. The ERIGO is a new tilt table that generates stepping movements. It was shown that the stepping movements reduced these cardio-vascular problems. In the current study, the ERIGO is combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) in order to increase the effect on the cardio-vascular system, but also to increase voluntary function of the leg muscles in incomplete SCI patients. The project is subdivided into two studies. The first one is performed with healthy subjects in order to describe normal muscular activity patterns of four leg muscles (vastus lateralis; biceps femoris; tibialis anterior; soleus) during the ERIGO stepping movements. The influence of different conditions regarding loading, speed, hip angle, and movement pattern on muscle activity patterns is examined. Muscular activities are assessed by electromyography (EMG). The second study, a randomized clinical trial, is carried out with chronic SCI subjects in order to compare the effects of a one-month ERIGO-FES-training with an ERIGO-training without FES. Outcome measures are heart rate and blood pressure, motor functions such as walking measured with the WISCI II, force, and spasticity, assessed with the Ashworth scale. |
