Title / Titel Mental and development disorders in infants with congenital heart disease

Summary / Zusammenfassung The main objective of this study is to discover early indicators for developmental and mental health deviations in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD), and to follow the course of these deviations over the first 3 years of life. In addition, the effects of specific CHD diagnoses and types of interventions on mental health and development will be studied. This will be carried out by identifying approx. 600 children with CHD within a birth cohort population study, the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), which includes around 70 000 infants at the beginning of 2007. The prospective case-control design of this study offers unique possibilities to detect early signs of mental disorders and developmental deviations. Given the expected size of the CHD group, it will be possible to relate information on the severity of the CHD condition and the invasiveness of treatment with developmental deviations and mental disorders.
