| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Congenital heart disease (CHD) occurs in about 2-3 per thousand life births. Previous studies have suggested that health-related quality of life and psychological adjustment may be impaired in children after open-heart surgery for CHD. However, findings are inconsistent and previous studies have several methodological shortcomings. Psychosocial factors such as socioeconomic status, coping strategies and family stress may influence long term quality of life and adjustment. It is unknown how psychosocial factors interact with medical risk factors, how they contribute to short and long-term outcome and in what extent they may be protective. The aim of this prospective study is twofold: First, we aime at assessing the course of health-related quality of life and psychological adjustment in children after open-heart surgery for CHD. Second, medical, individual and psychosocial predictors of psychological adjustment and health-related quality of life shall be examined. | ||||||
