Title / Titel Common pathways of atherosclerosis and neuro-degenerative diseases
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Gemeinsame Entstehungsprozesse von Atherosklerose und neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen
Summary / Zusammenfassung Clinical studies indicate a close relationship between the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, including vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and atherosclerotic burden of the vasculature. Moreover, treatment with anti-atherosclerotic drugs such as statins or the presence of estrogens have been associated with a delayed development of these diseases. In this project we are investigating the role vascular risk factors in the regulation of pathways commonly associated with degenerative diseases, as well as identifying the roles of proteins and targets involved in the pathogenesis of both vascular and neuro-degenerative disorders. The work has led to the identification and charakterization of secretase-like proteins which have been extensively studied in vitro and in vivo demonstrating that involvement in the regulation of inflammation, cell growth, and atherogenesis.
