Title / Titel Prognostic indicators for return to work of patients with chronic occupational neck and back pain - systematic review.
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung BACKGROUND: Recently, indicators for return to work (RTW) in patients with work-related chronic musculoskeletal diseases have been controversially discussed. We performed a systematic review of the literature to provide the evidence base for this discussion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched eight databases without language restrictions, checked reference lists and contacted authors for prospective studies on indicators predicting RTW in adults with non-specific neck or back pain. We screened all retrieved articles in duplicate against the inclusion criteria and assessed quality and extracted salient features of all included studies.
RESULTS: Eight publications of moderate quality were included. They reported on eighty medical, ergonomic and socio-demographical variables. The strongest indicators were pain behaviour and patient-estimated future work, while medical, ergonomic, demographical and education variables were less important.
CONCLUSION: The likelihood of RTW appears to be dependent on patients’ believes and behaviour, highlighting the importance of psychologists in an interdisciplinary therapeutic team.
