| Summary / Zusammenfassung | BACKGROUND: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are generally positive about receiving joint protection (JP) instructions. Short- and long-term benefits have been demonstrated and patients report of being better able to do daily routine tasks with less pain. Despite these positive effects, adherence to joint protection is low. OBJECTIVE: to gain insight into the concept of JP as seen by RA-patients and comparing the beliefs and attitudes of RA-patients and of occupational therapists (OT) experienced in treating RA-patients, factors important (Pros) or not important (CONS) towards joint protection about their abilities in handling situations requiring JP activities were identified. METHODS: A mixed methods study was conducted with semi-structured face-to-face interviews and dichotomous rating of items by RA patients and OTs. RESULTS: expected till end of 2007 CONCLUSIONS: Patient’s beliefs and attitudes may well work as facilitators or barriers in JP instructions. These patients’ perspectives should be taken into account when providing JP instructions and additional strategies for improving self-efficacy and supporting decision making towards JP might have the potential to improve adherence. |
