Completed research project

Title / Titel Knowledge, Power, Politics: Evaluating social and institutional practices in sustainable development and syndrome mitigation research
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung In the field of sustainable development, knowledge usually has a positive connotation. More and better knowledge essentially contributes to enhanced policy and practice. However, knowledge is power, and those who are able to use specific types of knowledge as a key economic and political resource can increase their influence and power - not always in favour of those in need.
This project of the NCCR North-South is situated within a strand of new thinking on the role of knowledge in and for development. It sheds light on the political nature of knowledge production and knowledge exchange in development research and policy. It asks questions such as, what is the role of academic knowledge in development and environmental policy today?, who sets new trends and concepts in development and environmental policy?, how do the financial resources for development research impact on the global dissemination of specific concepts?, and what are the mechanisms of power and politics that shape development research and policy today?
The project has three research objectives: (1) It examines scientific knowledge production processes in development research, (2) it identifies and evaluates institutional and social practices at the interface between development research and policy, and (3) it assesses the impacts of knowledge exchange in the North-South dialogue and cooperation practice.
