Completed research project

Title / Titel Research and education related to brain research in non-human primates: a multidisciplinary European training platform
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The main objective of current projects in the lab is to investigate vestibular-induced orienting movements and gaze stabilization in the alert head-fixed and head-free rhesus monkey. The experiments focus on gravity-dependent modulations of the vestibulo-ocular (and vestibulo-collic) reflexes during execution of simple behavioral tasks.

Proposal 1: Spatial characteristics of visually guided gaze (eye-head) movements during transient off-axis rotations in a stationary visual environment that is statically or dynamically tilted relative to earth vertical. The hypothesis to be tested is that gaze orienting movements under these circumstances are organized such that eye in space stays close to Listing's plane.

Proposal 2: Response characteristics of position-vestibular, position-vestibular pause and eye-head cells in the medial and/or superior vestibular nuclei during gaze orienting movements using a similar paradigm as in Proposal 1. The vestibular characteristics of the ensuing orientation responses will be studied in the dark. Aspects of visual-vestibular interactions that do not interfere with orienting responses will be investigated in the light. The question is whether the position-vestibular, position-vestibular pause and eye-head cells in the medial and/or superior vestibular nuclei carry orientation signals.
