|Summary / Zusammenfassung||The project is part of the research project "Views and Perspectives: Towards a History of Non-Fiction Film in Switzerland 1896-1964". It focuses on industrial films of two key-branches of the Swiss industry: on the food industry and on the metal and engineering industry. The cinematic representation of individual companies as well as of this industrial sector as a whole are to be analysed.
Two aspects of the cinematic representation are salient: first, the construction of the industry’s national self-representation aimed at the outside world and its consequences for the image of Switzerland abroad as well as the strengthening of the national identity within the country. Second, this project focuses on the historical development of the domestic industrial film as a reflection of the self-image and the public mood within the field of tension between crisis and economic boom, tradition and innovation, progress and modern age. The relationship the film creates between the analysed industrial sectors and their products on the one hand and the public discourse on the other hand is of special interest.
Apart from aspects of production and the development of cinematic forms of presentation to represent the industry’s individual branches, research focuses on areas of distribution and reception. The channels of distribution and structures of presentation are to be analysed, as well as the target audience and the reception of the domestic industrial film at home and abroad.
