| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The prohibition to use persons merely as a means plays a key role both in common sense morality and in moral theory. The charge of undue instrumentalization is also a familiar move in applied ethics. Despite the prohibition’s widespread appeal it is not obvious, however, which practices are ruled out by it. Neither is it clear how the prohibition to use persons merely as a means relates to other moral precepts. While taking these and other challenges seriously the research project seeks to defend the prohibition by carefully establishing its content, its importance, and its justification. It develops the idea that the prohibition to use persons merely as a means is to be understood in terms of respect for the free exercise of a person’s agency. This research project is part of a larger project within the University Research Priority Programme for Ethics, aimed at developing a moral theory based on the notion of respect for persons. | ||||
