| Summary / Zusammenfassung | This extension to TopIce focuses on further experiments that will explore the link between uncertainty in topography and ice sheet modelling results. The wide availability of high resolution terrain data provides an opportunity to investigate process-based techniques for appropriate error minimisation when generalising that data to lower resolution. Such lower resolution data, with known error properties, can then be used in ice sheet model runs. Through the adoption of a modular open source ice sheet model (GLIMMER), and participation within its development, opportunities exist to integrate the characterisation of important sub-grid scale processes such as ice sheet inception and ablation. Experiments will be performed to investigate how the physical representation of processes might depend on uncertainties associated with topographic representation, as the physics within ice sheet models continues to improve. The project will carry on the successful collaboration between the Universities of Zurich and Edinburgh. The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that it will produce quality publications in both the environmental modelling and Geographic Information Science (GIScience) literature. The projects key outcomes will be to: • demonstrate the importance of terrain representation on uncertainty in elements of ice sheet modelling; and • provide an exemplar for GIScientists of the importance of terrain representation in process modelling. |
