Summary / Zusammenfassung The goal of this habilitation thesis is to develop learning arrangements for foreign language teaching which equally foster students' task-specific, personal and social competences. In a first step, a number of complex instructional settings are developed for the English language classroom. In a second step, these settings are implemented together with teachers at Gymnasium level. In a third step, these experiences are evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Research Questions:

  • How can teachers organize feedback loops in which students can monitor the strength and weakness of their performances?
  • How can teachers deal with student development which is mulitdimensional rather than sequential, and where growth takes place on many interrelated fronts at once?
  • By what steps do teachers arrive at quality judgments, criteria do they apply and how do they communicate them to students? More information
