Title / Titel At the source of Northern Italo-Romance: quantity and related phenomena

Original title / Originaltitel Alle sorgenti del tipo linguistico italo-romanzo settentrionale: quantità e fenomeni connessi
Summary / Zusammenfassung The project aims to reconstruct the origin of the basic properties that define Northern Italo-Romance as opposed to central and southern Italo-Romance varieties. These properties are the product of phonological changes, involving consonant degemination, final vowel deletion and the rise of distinctive vowel quantity. As to the mutual relationship of these changes, there is a huge literature: the present project will propose a new comprehensive account of the (structural and chronological) relationships between them.

The procedure includes the evaluation of the available literature and the collection of new first-hand data through fieldwork on dialect areas which turn out to be of special importance for reconstruction of the features at issue. As a part of this project, two fieldwork sessions were carried out in June 2002 and September 2004 with the Phonetics Seminar, co-directed by Michele Loporcaro and Stephan Schmid. The two dialect areas chosen as goals for these fieldwork trips were, respectively, Val Bregaglia (Soglio) and Southern Emilia (Lizzano in Belvedere, in the province of Bologna, and Piandelagotti, in the province of Modena). The dialects spoken in both areas depart from the common Northern Italo-Romance pattern in that they still preserve consonant length, at least after main stress. Furthermore, the Emilian varieties also are peculiar in that they preserve, to a certain extent, final vowels which were lost (except -/a/) in most of Northern Italo-Romance.
