Completed research project

Title / Titel Literary Transmission in Early Modern Scandinavia
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Transmission in den skandinavischen Literaturen in der Frühen Neuzeit
Summary / Zusammenfassung The project concerned itself with a concept of literary theory studied in various philological disciplines. The term 'transmission' foregrounds the manifold and highly complex aspects of textual change covered by concepts like 'variance', 'mouvance', seriality, change of media and genre etc., which play a decisive role in the tradition of texts through time. As the preferred period of analysis the project focused on the Early Modern time – to be understood as a culturally coherent frame covering the time from the late Middle Ages to the Age of Enlightenment – that has scarcely been researched in international Scandinavian studies. Three case studies within our project attempt applications of the concept of transmission to narrative variations in the late medieval and early modern Icelandic manuscript matrix (lic. phil. Herbert Wäckerlin); to the discourses reflected in early modern Danish and Swedish chapbooks (Anna Katharina Dömling, M.A.); and, in an already published doctoral thesis, to the phenomenon of contingency in poetological texts of 17th and 18th century Sweden (Dr. Barbara Sabel).
