| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The motif of a deity or a hero fighting a serpentine monster is found in various cultures. This research project analyses and compares Greek and Mesopotamian examples of this fighting motif in iconographic and literary sources. For comparison, a multi-layered approach is followed. First, the images and texts are compared with each other, then the iconographic and literary shapes of the motif are analysed within the framework of the Mesopotamian and the Greek religious traditions respectively, and finally the individual results are compared and crosscultural forms of the fight are further elaborated.
