| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Phenomena of intercultural transference in the realm of literature, philosophy and religion have since long been at the heart of the project-leading hellenist’s research. In various studies on Jewish-hellenistic and early Christian texts, the transference and gradual fusing of the Jewish-Christian and the pagan philosophical traditions (especially Platonism) have been traced and interpreted against the general socio-cultural background of the period. Questions of cultural and literary interplay between earlier advanced civilizations, the adaptation and integration of foreign religio-philosophical elements into the Greek intellectual tradition, as well as the continuous processing and overwriting of such cultural amalgams, from the 4th century down to the end of antiquity and beyond, have similarly been considered in works on Pythagoras and other early-greek figures at the crossroads of religion and philosophy. This approach is being pursued and further developed within the frame of the current research project, which is meant to be carried out during a 4 year directorship at the Swiss Institute in Rome (2005-2011/2) and which primarily deals with two topics: 1) Cyril of Alexandria’s voluminous refutation of Julian the Apostate’s pamphlet against the Christians, which is one of the most fascinating documents of the intellectual controversy between the pagan Greco-Roman culture and the Jewish-Christian tradition in Late Antiquity (http://www.research-projects.uzh.ch/p498.htm) 2) a general evaluation of the multi-faceted history of philosophy in Roman Imperial times and Late Antiquity (http://www.research-projects.uzh.ch/p3615.htm). |
