|Original title / Originaltitel||"The Thrills of Conspiracy - Verschwörung und Angstlust"|
|Summary / Zusammenfassung||Since the 1960s the ‚paranoia film‘ has emerged in the international film and media landscape as a meta-genre in its own right. Structured by a paranoid fantasy which usually takes the form of conspiracy, and utilizing ‚auxiliary‘ genres like the thriller, the film noir, or the phantastic (horror, fantasy, science fiction), this type of film has gradually become more and more significant.
The present research project aims to tackle this phenomenon. Its main goal is a poetics and hermeneutics of paranoia film as a meta-genre within the context of cultural paranoia as evidenced through popular conspiracy theories. The project will focus mainly on two crucial decades of North American and European paranoia films, the 1970s and the 1990s in comparison. Analysis will be informed by genre theory, film aesthetics, narratology, and cultural theory. This approach will allow for conclusions about historically specific meanings and gratifications the meta-genre has to offer, in view of knowledge gained about the individual films as symptoms of deep-seated and historically specific cultural contradictions and crises.
