| Summary / Zusammenfassung | In medieval Spain, Arabic, Hebrew, and Romance poetry were interrelated. The Romance kharjas are the oldest known poems in an Ibero- Romance language. They occur as final verses in Hebrew and Arabic strophic compositions (muwashshahas) written in Muslim Spain between 1050 and 1250. Their language is the archaic dialect of Southern Spain known as Mozarabic. This project has two aims. On the one hand, a completely new critical edition of the Hebrew kharjas within their respective muwashshahas will be established, based on the palaeographic analysis of all existing manuscripts (mostly from the Geniza). On the other hand, this whole body of poetry will receive a new interpretation, with special emphasis on its intertextual relations. The most important poet is Yehuda ha-Levi (1075 - ca. 1140), which is generally considered as the greatest classic of post-biblical Hebrew literature, and which is at the same time the first Spanish poet of known personal identity. His plurilingual poetry is situated at the crossway of Biblical influences, the classical and contemporary Arabic lyrics, and the earliest manifestations of poetry in an Ibero-Romance language. It is characterised by a high degree of artistic sophistication and of intertextual complexity. Other poets whose works are considered in relation with this project include Ibn Quzmân, renowned for his poetry in dialectal Andalusian Arabic mingled with Romance words and sentences; and the intertextual relations between the great Spanish mystics Ibn Arabî and San Juan de la Cruz. The texts are interpreted in the framework of a detailed literary and linguistic analysis. A poetic translation into German will address to a broader audience. | ||
