Completed research project

Title / Titel Typology of fundamental syntactic relations
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Linguistic typology studies the structural diversity of individual languages, conceived as surface variations of underlying universal principles. The main emphasis of this long-term project is on the fundamental relation between the predicate and its main complements, traditionally called subject and object. Aspects of this relationship which were analysed in this project include the following: accusativity/ ergativity/ duality as the main configurational types; positional typology ("word order typology") as a focus of an integrated typological approach; the marking of pragmatic categories such as theme/ rheme; differential object marking; explanations of linguistic change in a typological framework; the history of linguistic typology. Research is based on the comparison of a wide range of languages. Some case studies emphasise on Romance languages, which offer a particularly interesting testing ground because their history is fairly well documented and has been analysed in depth. The ultimate - perhaps unattainable - goal is an axiomatic system of basic relations in human language.
