Title / Titel Aeromicrobiology: Monitoring the distribution and diversity of airborne microorganisms in indoor and outdoor environments
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Indoor as well as outdoorair contains a complex mixture of bioaerosols such as fungi and bacteria along with non-biological particles including products from various combustion processes. Bioaerosols have been traditionally linked to health damage to human beings, flora and fauna. To identify the different risks and to prepare various exposure thresholds, microbiology of air samples from a series of indoor environments must be characterized, i.e. the different microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) must be identified and quantified. In particular, short-term dynamic patterns of the microbial loads have to be assessed and regular temporal patterns have to be determined. Results provide a significant scientific basis for outdoor and indoor air quality control helping in elaborating risk prevention programs for workers and dwellers. In addition, clues are obtained regarding the generation, occurrence, and displacement of bioaerosols in natural (outdoor) environments and their relation to the specific sampling location.
