| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Ice sheet modelling seeks to improve our understanding of the behaviour of complex dynamic systems through the abstraction of key elements of the ice sheet system. It can allow us to perform experiments that investigate how the system is sensitive to changes in parameters such as climate and bed conditions.Ice sheet models typically run at resolutions of many kilometres and so do not resolve well certain processes which may contribute to model uncertainties. During inception, local topography may be of key importance in identifying locations for ice nucleation. Equally, ablation may take place in a very narrow zone at the boundaries of the ice sheet, where again topography and local feedbacks can add significantly to model uncertainties. It is proposed to examine these uncertainties through an interdisciplinary project combining knowledge from the environmental modelling field and GIScience (Geographic Information Science). The direct linkage between topography and model uncertainties, and the opportunities afforded by the wide availability of high-resolution topographic data means that an excellent opportunity exists to examine the importance of the representation of topography in ice sheet modelling. |
