| Summary / Zusammenfassung | BIODEPTH (Biodiversity and Ecological Processes in Terrestrial Herbaceous Ecosystems: experimental manipulations of plant communities) is a project originally funded by the European Union (Framework IV) designed to investigate the effects of declining biodiversity on ecosystem processes and to elucidate the underlaying population dynamic and ecophysiological processes. These objectives were achieved via controlled experiments in established grassland communities and by closely associated modelling studies. The same core experiment was being carried out at eight European sites (Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Portugal and Greece) forming two orthogonal transects, running NW-SE and NE-SW across Europe, thus embracing a wide range of climates and soil types. Our Institute is leading further analyses of data from this experiment. In particular, we are interested in successional changes after cessation of biodiversity manipulations.
