| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The incidence of fractures in Switzerland is 140/100'000 inhabitants/year, the cost of the hospitalisation (acute and for rehabilitation) are more than 500 million Swiss francs/year. To reduce these enormous costs it is important to find out patients who are at risk of getting a hip fracture and to begin with these patients a prophylaxis treatment. The aim of the SEMOF-Study (Schweizerische Evaluierung der Messmethode des osteoporotischen Frakturrisikos) is to evluate in 8'000 women (from all over Switzerland) which measuring method is the best one for finding patients with risk of hip fractures. For comparison we use three different ultrasound systems (two for the calcaneus and one for the metacarpalia) a DEXA-system and the highly precise quantitative computed tomography, Densican 1'000. Included in this study are only women aged between 71 and 80. |
