| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Empirical data show considerable differences between the three main linguistic regions in Switzerland concerning the integration of women into higher education, into the labour market or concerning the acceptance of equal political rights for both sexes. These facts support the assumption that there must be also substantial differences in the prevailing norms and attitudes concerning gender relations and gender roles between the three main linguistic regions in this country. This project aims at describing in a comparative, systematic and theory-based way regional differences in gender inequality in Switzer-land and their underlying factors. Based on a gender contract theorization the research project aims at elaborating an empirical basis that characterizes central aspects of gender order (real structures of gender relations in the different societal institutions) and gender culture (prevailing norms, values and attitudes concerning gender relations) in the three main linguistic regions of Switzerland. The study uses mainly descriptive and multivariate quantitative methodes. Census data and data on federal votes are the main sources. The study contributes to the actual, larger scientific debate on universality and difference in social inequality, enlarges the still small base of empirical knowledge on gender relations in different social, cultural and political contexts and provides a basis for political actions towards more gender equality in all the regions of the country.
