| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The goal of this project is to provide a framework for wildfire risk assessment in order to support well balanced forest fire management activities. The term wildfire risk is used here as a measure of the hazard posed by wildfire, expressing both the probability of a damage to be caused, and the expected extend of this damage. Therefore, in the assessment of wildfire risk the probability of a fire to occur at any location and its impact on objects (both man-made and natural) must be considered. To do so, the knowledge about fire occurrence, fire spread and fire effects must be combined. Usually, these three topics are treated separately in wildfire research. The proposed framework aims at linking (existing) fire occurrence modelling and methods for the assessment of fire effects by models for fire behaviour and propagation, thus generating a "multi-dimensional view" of the phenomenon wildfire. The core of the framework is a risk matrix, specially adapted for the analysis of wildfire risk. It allows the consideration of all relevant factors influencing the risk situations. Special emphasis is put on spatial components and high resolution spatial analysis of wildfires using GIS technology. For accuracy estimation sensitivity analysis and error propagation are anticipated as main topics. Altogether, the anticipated framework will provide spatial decision support facilities (SDSS) to various users (wildfire researchers, management organisations, nature conservaton organisations, fire fighting professionals, etc.) as different scenarios can be postulated and the influence of the different models and data be evaluated.
