Title / Titel GIS Swiss National Park (GIS-SNP)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Geographisches Informationssystem Schweizerischer Nationalpark (GIS-SNP)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The GIS-SNP is an ongoing project that supports research and management activities which are carried out on behalf of the Swiss National Park. This project was initiated in 1992 by the Research Commission of the Swiss National Park and is generously supported by the Swiss Academy of Sciences. The design and implentation phase took place at the Department of Geography (GIS DIvision). Since 2000 the GIS-SNP is fully operational and also operates out of Zernez – the headquarter of the Swiss National Park. Together with the research oriented part that is located at the Department of Geography, the GIS-SNP now represents an efficient environment for spatial analysis and modeling in the field of nature conservation. It not only supports the park authorities, but also the research community that is linked with the Swiss National Park. The GIS-SNP concentrates on the following topics: (a) elaboration and constant renewal of the general GIS data base, (b) application programming, (c) user support, (d) and specific GIS-SNP-projects (e.g., bearded vulture monitoring). Due the special ecological and legal situation of the Swiss National Park the GIS-SNP has established two main topics: wildland fire research and wildlife management research. Both topics are closely related to the management activities and needs of the Swiss National Park.
