Title / Titel Endogenous Development and Local Initiatives in Mountainous Communities in Switzerland
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Eigenständige Regionalentwicklung und lokale Initiativen im Schweizer Berggebiet
Summary / Zusammenfassung The reorganization of agriculture policy as well as structural changes of the economy and the stagnation in the Swiss tourism industry lead to a changed context and new challenges for rural regions.
Endogenous regional development is a development strategy, which is based on regional necessities, locally available resources and the activation of endogenous potentials. An essential element of the strategy is the broad participation of the local population in the initiating, planning, implementing and monitoring of the process of development.
The aim of this study is to investigate under what conditions and to what extent endogenous regional development is a strategy for mountainous communities for facing contemporary challenges and problems. The dissertation is part of the international „Community Evaluation Project“ which aims at comparing regional development strategies in three industrialized countries: Switzerland, USA and Japan. Such a comparison is interesting because in these three countries, rural communities are facing similar problems in spite of their very different historical and cultural background.
