Title / Titel QualiGen: Integrating Methods for Quality Evaluation in Cartographic Generalization

Summary / Zusammenfassung The project concentrates on the study of methods for quality evaluation in automated map generalization, with the aim of contributing to the development of improved generalization strategies, operations, and algorithms. This topic was already pursued during the precursor project (also funded by SNF). Quality evaluation and measurement is gaining increasing importance in generalization research, as the lack of sound evaluation methods is a major impediment to the development of better generalization techniques. Evaluation methods in generalization are needed for purposes such as detection of conflicts necessitating remedial action by generalization operations (e.g., cluttering and overlap of map features, imperceptible feature size); for comparative assessment of generalization algorithms, software systems, and generalization results (i.e. maps or databases); and for runtime evaluation functions in iterative and evolutionary software systems such as multi-agent systems and genetic algorithms.
