Title / Titel A pilot study to evaluate the effect of Forsteo® (Teriparatide, 1-34 rh-PTH) in Anorexia Ner-vosa patients with low bone mineral density and increased bone fragility (FAN-Trial)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Patients with anorexia nervosa often have an important reduced bone density, which represents a major risk, either at a young age or later in life to suffer spontaneous fractures.
So far there is no approved therapy for patients with anorexia nervosa and decreased bone density. Early therapy for the prevention of osteoporosis and the reduction in the incidence of fractures is important for each individual patient. To have an effective treatment is essential for the future treatment of women affected.
Teriparatide is on the market since 2005 and has proved itself in the treatment of osteoporosis to improve bone density and to reduce the incidence of fractures. However, it is not yet approved for young women.
By the anabolic effects and the short half-life, this medicament should be appropriate also for therapy in young women who have not yet reached their peak bone mass.
Based on previous data regarding safety and efficacy of teriparatide and due to the severity of the disease - with so far a lack of effective treatment options - to carry out this study is necessary.
