Title / Titel Event Monitor. An Instrument for the recording and evaluation of media events in electronic media
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Event-Monitor. Ein Instrument zur Erfassung und Auswertung von medialen Events in den elektronischen Medien
Summary / Zusammenfassung a) Objective
The objective of the project is to establish an 'event monitor' and operate it for two years. In electronic media and in selected print media, the event monitor records issues which have been produced on purpose by political agents with regard to their media responses. The event monitor measures the power of the responses and records their representation in the media with the aid of a categorical content analysis. For this, an on-line access will be established in co-operation with SF DRS (Swiss television channel) which will enable the permanent evaluation of data of the most important information programmes (Tagesschau, 10 vor 10, Rundschau). On the methodological level, the technique of database research will be broadened and improved by 'key-word scanning'. Events are productions of occurrences created by agents in order to achieve responses of media. This should lead to social attention and influence of political claims. Therefore, events would not take place in the appearing form without mass media.

b) Procedure
By researching events, a phenomenon of political communication which has lately gained a lot of attention is recorded and evaluated empirically. This is done through comparisons of media(print media, electronic media) as well as comparisons within media (different transmitting categories, rubrics respectively). The methodical access is carried out through quantitative and qualitative analysis of responses.

c) Realisation
The research project will make the results of the analysis of the responses available on the internet through an event barometer which shows the different responses of the media to the recorded events in graphical form. It should be set up as a 'flexible search engine' which allows interested users to observe the media effect of events in a comparison of media. Like this, the scientific project is of practice-oriented benefit for it contributes to the reflection about the conditions of agenda settings in the media.
