Title / Titel Alumni Study: Tracking former scholars from developing and transition countries at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Switzerland is the country with the highest percentage of immigrant scientists worldwide and the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich are among the most attractive research and education institutions in Switzerland. University graduates move on to careers within or outside academia, both in Switzerland and abroad, and contribute to scientific and economic progress as well as expanding the connections of the respective universities. It is thus in the interest of these universities to be well informed about university graduates’ post-university mobility and its implications. This is particularly the case regarding the impact of funding opportunities open to or explicitly targeting students from developing and transition countries. Through educating talented students and researchers from less privileged regions the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich contribute to intellectual and academic capacity development worldwide. However, the wider implications of these funding opportunities are at best vaguely known.
Therefore, the study proposes to evaluate concluded and on-going funding instruments at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich for students from developing and transition countries to create a comparison with existing tracking studies as well as to investigate the potential importance of networks of the graduates of both universities in Zurich.

Scope of the study
• Evaluation of ‘research for development’ scholarships4 and the Swiss Government Scholarship, potentially further scholarships targeting developing/transition countries
• Range of academic degrees: MSc, PhD, post-doc
Principal investigator: Emma Lindberg (ETHZ), scientific collaborator: Susan Thieme (UZH)
