Completed research project

Title / Titel Zaigai Hihô: Hidden Treasures Outside East Asia
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The Zaigai Hihô project undertakes archival research on East Asian objects in museums and private collections in Switzerland. The aim is to closely study and document the individual objects and to also examine the histories of contact between Switzerland and East Asia. This investigation involves not only the objects themselves, but also the people, institutional frameworks, as well as economic, cultural, and personal networks. Thus the project will contribute to an understanding of the transnational cultural transfers between Switzerland and East Asia.
The Zaigai Hihô project integrates collaboration between the university, museums, and private collectors, student training and research, expertise of international scholars, conferences and lectures, exhibitions, publications, and the digital presentation of research results.
Students study objects from private and museum collections in a number of courses and present their results in the E-Learning platform developed for this project as well as in exhibitions and publications. Teams of international researchers are invited to add their expertise to the study of objects.
In March 2013 the 3-day international conference "Moving Art Between East Asia and the West" took place and three exhibitions are being prepared for 2014 to present the re-discovered objects and research results at the Musée d'ethnographie de Neuchâtel, at the Historisches- und Völkerkundemuseum St. Gallen, and at the Cabinet d'arts graphiques/Musée d'art et d'histoire de Genève.
The first results of the research project are presented in the database developed for the Zaigai Hihô project and publications scheduled for 2014 will present individual collections as well as the results of the 2013 conference.
