Summary / Zusammenfassung Again and again, the political demand for participation on the part of children and youths is formulated and it is increasingly to be found at the center of the public and subject-specific attention. The younger generation’s involvement and inclusion are not only relevant in politics, but rather in all domains, in which their lives are shaped, e.g. in the family and in school. In order to guarantee the adolescents’ participation, well-funded information is needed, whereas the viewpoints of children and youths are to be taken into account appropriately.
The design of the study is multi-methodical and multi-perspective. The quantitative part-study deals with current and representative results in regard to the question how children and youths estimate their participation possibilities relating to central domains of their lives (family, school, community). In comparison to a study conducted earlier, it should now also be determined, to what extent changes and developments have happened in the last years in this context. The aim of the qualitative part-study is to reconstruct the perspectives of children and youths in regard to participation adequately, in order resolve ambiguities, contradictions, and questions. Furthermore, perspectives of other agents (parents, teaching staff, community administrators and politicians) should be included, which are then to be analyzed together, as well as with the perspectives of the children and youths comparatively.
This study, realized in cooperation with UNICEF, should contribute to gather relevant and trustworthy information in regard to the participation of children and youths in Switzerland from the perspective of different agents and to be able to denominate starting points and possibilities of an adequate involvement of the younger generation in shaping their living conditions.
