LISA including effects due to the eccentricity of the orbits

Summary / Zusammenfassung Following our paper on the parameter estimation for coalescing massive binary black
holes with LISA using the full 2PN gravitational waveform and spin-orbit precession we
implemented these results by taking into account also the eccentricity in order to estimate
its influence on the parameter estimation. We are completing the numerical simulations
and writing up the paper with the results. We also invested substantial time in the study
of the impact on our results when assuming a shorter arm length (of about 1 million km
instead of 5 millions of km) for LISA. This is in the framework of the effort to redesign a
cheaper LISA mission, affordable by ESA only, since NASA has decided for the moment
to drop out for financial reasons. This work is done since we are member of the LISA
science team.
We also studied the impact of alternative general relativistic (GR) theories on the parameter
estimation for coalescing massive black holes as could be measured by LISA .
We introduced correction parameters that account for modified gravity into the second
post-Newtonian gravitational wave phase for circular, black hole binaries with precessing
spins. In order to find LISA’s measurement accuracy for physical parameters of the binaries,
we used the Fisher matrix approach and carried out Monte Carlo simulations for
several black hole binary mass combinations. We found that the typical accuracy of the
corrections are comparable to the GR fiducial values for total binary black hole masses
up to a few 10^(7) solar masses at redshift z = 1. Moreover, the introduction of alternative theory
parameters still leads to a reasonable accuracy of the binary parameters such as masses
and spins.
