| Summary / Zusammenfassung | This project exploits municipal-level data in the Canton of Zurich to address several questions. First, it examines the determinants of budgetary punctuations, that is, a pattern of general stability coupled with relatively frequent large adjustments, at the expense of moderate adaptations. The existence of such patterns is well established in the policy agendas literature, but their explanation remains unclear. Second, the project studies women's political representation. Are certain policies influenced by the presence of women in municipal executives? Do women receive stronger support at the cantonal and federal level in municipalities where women are represented in the executive? Are there more female candidates, and are their election chances higher, if more women have been elected in neighboring municipalities? Third, in recent years municipalities have extended child-care policies considerably thanks to cantonal and federal impulsions. To what extent have municipalities influenced one another in this process? In other words, what has been the role of policy diffusion? Fourth, following yardstick competition theories, to what extent are the reelection chances of incumbents affected by the relative success of policies in neighboring municipalities? | ||
