Title / Titel Using satellite imagery to improve snowmelt predictions in alpine catchments
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung This project will incorporate information on snowmelt derived from Envisat/ASAR images to improve future predictions of discharge in Swiss alpine catchments by better constraining snowmelt runoff generation processes in a conceptual hydrological model. This is a novel approach of combining satellite data with modeling, which will contribute to an improved representation of the timing and contribution of snowmelt in state-of-the-art hydrological models and a better assessment on impacts of downstream flows in alpine catchments. High alpine catchments are extremely susceptible to climate change impacts and are vital to the water supply for many communities and industries in Europe, however snowmelt runoff processes in these regions are poorly understood due to a lack of data. Our findings will help to improve future decision-making on water resource availability and management in these sensitive alpine catchments.
