| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The module consists of a number of research seminars dedicated to the analysis of the normative underpinnings of European integration in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary manner. In particular, a research seminar proposes a case study of the specific issues and challenges that contemporary Bosnia-Herzegovina has to face on the road to European integration. This case study allows for the exploration of the nexus between post-conflict peace- and state-building on the one hand, and European integration on the other. As an original political project, the European Union seems to have an inherent potential for successfully addressing the challenges of a deeply divided society such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, if only because of its own history of division and of its normative core based on the respect for human rights and rights of minorities. However, closer examination shows that there are a number of issues deserving further enquiry, such as: the power politics at play in the relationship between the EU and local actors, the adequacy between the aims and the means of European (and international) involvement in the region, as well the actual specific potential that the perspective of European integration might bring in terms of state-building and polity transformation |
