Title / Titel Analysis, Visualization and contextualisation of quantitative migration data of different scale
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Migration and development has become a topic of high interest especially in countries of the global South. With increasing interest academia as well as policy makers identify the lack of high quality migration data as one major obstacle for forming policies and maximizing the benefits of migration. Next to data availability a major challenge is to effectively represent, analyse and visualize large and highly dynamic data sets. Thereby, visualization of statistical data cannot only help displaying data in an attractive way but also to discover unknown patterns, generate new research questions and contribute to informed decision making in politics. Therefore the overall goal of the project is to support new insights into patterns of migration and interlinkages with development by screening and evaluating existing data and creating effective visual support to explore data sets and create knowledge that cannot be established by looking at raw data.
Databases are scattered but an increasing amount is available. Also researchers within the NCCR have studied migration patters particularly in South and Central Asia as well as Central America over a number of research projects, where mainly qualitative but also quantitative data is available. At the same time researchers especially working on and in JACS SEAS made major progress in displaying and analysing spatial information.
Therefore the proposed research aims to create meaningful and usable graphics to represent larger multi-variate spatio-temporal data sets to provide global and regional overviews of migration; to explore and use the potential of visual representation to be able to discover hidden patterns and relationships between migration and development concealed in large datasets; but also to underline already gained insights from existing research within the NCCR N-S. Furthermore produced visualisations and qualitative interpretations results will support the design of socio-economic policies and migration related programmes and generate questions for further research.
