| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Can democratic decision-making and representational-parliamentary democratic politics be justified in terms of their legitimacy due to their epistemic and aesthetic powers? I try to show that, in a qualified sense and not exclusively, this is possible. Epistemic justifications of democracy, as opposed to pure aggregative or pure deliberative justifications of democracy emphasize the knowledge-generating capacity of democracies. I construe a distinct version of an epistemic justification against the backdrop of the writings of Charles Peirce and John Dewey. Also based on Dewey (among others) I try to argue that democracy’s legitimacy furthermore normatively depends on acknowledging the “aesthetic gap” that exists between democracies’ representatives and the represented and on a notion of democratic citizenship that emphasizes the importance of self-determination in terms of self- and social criticism. | ||
