Title / Titel Positive Psychology and the military: Virtues and values in the Swiss armed forces
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The aim of this project is twofold. First the role of character strength and orientations to happiness is studied in relation to work & life satisfaction, subjective and objective career success among Swiss professional officers. Signature strength of military personnel will be examined and it will be studied which character strength are predictive of happiness in this group. Furthermore, the extent to which pleasure, engagement and meaning are involved in criteria will be examined as well as whether level of career success is related to endorsements to the engaged and the meaningful life. The latter relationships were confirmed (Proyer, Annen, Eggimann, Schneider, & Ruch, 2012) and this study confirmed that variables of positive psychological functioning are useful additions in the field of military psychology and that they might hold a key for the development of strategies for improving both, work- and life satisfaction among military personnel.

The second project involves the study of values and virtues in the Swiss Armed Forces. Core values and virtues will be identified through interviews of high rank personnel. In a next step a classification will be developed and an instruments to its assessment will be generated. These instruments will then be used to conduct studies validating the role of values and virtues in the military context.
