| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Fundamental tasks in geography are almost always linked to space. While space is indeed a 'must have ingredient' for geography, we can not exclusively deal with space alone; we analyze systems, environmental or societal processes. These processes have non-spatial attributes and a temporal dimension; questions such as "when", "how long" and "how often" are critical to a proper geographic analysis. TIVA (Time Information Visualization and Analysis) studies the impact of scale in temporal information integrated in geographic tasks. Drawing some parallels to the well-known Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), TIVA aims at demonstrating how, when and to what degree the selection of the temporal units in fact changes the results of a geographic analysis. We call this particular aspect of temporal information analysis MTUP (Modifiable Time Unit Problem). The long term objectives of the project is to create taxonomies of geographic processes that are tightly integrated with time, test a set of temporal scales for each, and finally create guidelines that may allow researchers and practitioners to decide what is the appropriate temporal scale when they collect and/or analyze time-dependent geographic data. To systematically study the scale effects, a data collection and analysis system is under development. Within this particular application we work with video data (based on existing webcams) because this allows for rich possibilities for documenting, visualizing and analyzing geographic processes. Other types of movement data will be included in the study as the project progresses. |
