Summary / Zusammenfassung This project aims at developing novel concepts, models and methods inspired by human visual system (HVS) and implementing the findings in visualization of geographic data. When HVS’s limitations are taken into consideration, it becomes evident that a great amount of detail is not perceived by humans for a variety of psycho-physiological reasons. Current computational and semantic geovisualization processes rely on well-established algorithms to remove redundant or irrelevant information to overcome hardware and/or bandwidth limitations, and much research has been done in this area. However the biological limitations of HVS are not exploited or integrated into geovisualization processes. To explore what HVS-inspired approaches can bring to geovisualization domain; we work with a concept called foveation. Foveation is an HVS-inspired, typically two-dimensional computer vision method that produces a non-uniform display by degrading the resolution on peripheral regions where human visual acuity is compromised by nature. Within the framework of this project), geofoveation concept is proposed. Geofoveation takes the foveation metaphor and extends it to include the depth and motion perception (third and forth dimensions), exploring the potential of foveation in geography domain. We further specialize in stereoscopic media, because stereoscopic 3D is commonly used for acquiring three-dimensional geographic coordinates from aerial and satellite imagery and in this particular sub-domain data can be especially large. Project will provide a test bed for benchmarking for the computational efficiency of algorithms, for running user tests for perceptual quality of the visualizations produced by these algorithms.
