Completed research project

Title / Titel The role of character strengths at work
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung In general, positive psychology postulates character helps people to flourish and leads them to good and right, morally positively valued behavior (Park, 2004; Peterson & Park, 2006). Additionally, character (i.e., strengths and virtues) is seen as a determinant how individuals cope with adversity (Peterson & Seligman, 2004). If these assumptions are correct, character strengths should be related to work related criteria such as regarding one's job as a calling, job performance or coping with stress. Another project has already shown that character strengths as measured with the VIA-IS (Peterson, Park, & Seligman, 2005) do discriminate between occupational groups. Hence, character strengths differ in the amount they matter across occupations. Consequently, the first aim of the project is to investigate person-work environment fit with respect to character strengths and the consequences for outcomes like regarding one's job as a calling. Secondly, this project focuses on the relationships between character strengths and work related criteria like job performance and coping with stress.
