Completed research project

Title / Titel AGROVET-STRICKHOF – Translational Research Center
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Within the CRUS-Project P-06 AGROVET-STRICKHOF – Translational Research Center, a new metabolic center with a total of 12 respiratory chambers (4 small for rabbits & poultry, 4 medium for pigs, sheep & goats) and 4 large for beef & dairy cows) should be established. The metabolic center is an integral part of the planned Research and Education Center Lindau, which aims for a holistic approach of the understanding of the World Food System, especially the area of „Production of healthy food from healthy animals“.
Thanks to the respiratory chambers, measurements of a variety of metabolic parameters are possible. For example, the quotient of produced carbon dioxide and used oxygen results in the respiratory quotient, which gives information on the type of substrate (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) metabolised. In combination with the collection of urine, faeces, and products (eggs, milk etc.), carbon-, nitrogen-, and energy balances can be calculated. The measurement of methane and ammonia can also give a more detailed insight in the environmental impacts of animal agriculture.
The chambers are controlled for temperature and humidity. This allows experiments at conditions likely to become normal in the future due to the global climate change. For example, it is not clear if and how the productivity of farm animals is affected by an increase in temperature. This is of great importance to answer the question of how the availability of healthy and sustainable food of animal origin can be guaranteed in future.
