Original title / Originaltitel Die Filmzensur im Kanton Zürich seit 1945
Summary / Zusammenfassung Using the concept of Cinema as a «Public Sphere» in the sense of Corinna Müller and Harro Segeberg, the dissertation project aims to explore the historical reception of cinema in the Swiss canton of Zurich since 1945. The historical reception will be conceptualised as a dynamics between four aspects, i.e. the body of regulations with their implicit moral and social norms, the distribution and national production of movies, the diverse audiences and modes of film reception, and the related media coverage. In this configuration, various censorship cases will emerge as key points. By analyzing the contexts as well as the incriminated films or scenes, the changes in the governmental control over audiences and movies as a distinct form of mass culture will be critically examined.
