Title / Titel Economic Competencies at the End of Secondary Education in Switzerland

Summary / Zusammenfassung In the study we asses economic competencies of students at the end of secondary education (grade 12 and 13). The representative sample will comprise students from Grammar Schools (Gymnasien) as well as from Professional Maturity Schools (PMS; Berufsmaturitaetsschulen) in the german-speaking part of Switzerland (N = 3.000). Our understanding of economic competencies contains an economic literacy (basic knowledge and skills in the domains of economics and business administration) as well as so-called non-cognitive abilities. This abilities incorporate interest on economic problems and motivational-volitional orientations to tackle them. Furthermore we look on attitudes and values for a responsible problem-solving.

In addition to the measurement of economic competencies we proof several hypotheses on prediction of the competencies, particularly school and instructional variables. Data will gathered within a cross-sectional design at the end of school year 2010/11 by achievement tests and questionnaires. First results will be published in 2012.
