| Abstract (PDF, 14 KB) | |||
| Summary / Zusammenfassung | This is a prospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with symptomatic lumbar disc herniations and radiculopathy, confirmed by MRI, who are being treated with spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). This is a pragmatic study evaluating the outcomes of these patients who will have the treatment normally provided by a chiropractic clinic. Thus there are no changes to usual care. Data collection includes demographic information, pain medication use, back and leg pain severity (NRS) or neck and arm pain severity and completion of the Oswestry questionnaire for lumbar disc herniation patients prior to commencement of treatment. Pain severity of the low back and leg (NRS), the Patient's global impression of change (PGIC), changes in medication intake, and the Oswestry or NDI questionnaire data will also be collected via short telephone interviews at various time points after the start of treatment up to one year. Exclusion criteria include specific pathologies of the spine that are contraindications to SMT (tumors, infections, inflammatory spondylarthropathies, acute fractures, Paget's disease, unstable congenital anomalies and severe osteoporosis), previous spinal surgery, signs of cauda equina syndrome (CES), sequestration of disc material, body mass index > 30, spondylolisthesis, neurogenic claudication and pregnancy. | ||
