| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Graphene and hexagonal boron nitride are sp2 hybridized layers of carbon or boron nitride that may be grown on transition metal surfaces. On substrates like rhodium or ruthenium both of these new materials corrugate and form periodic superlattices with a lattice constant of about 3nm. Only recently it was realized that large lateral electric fields in these structures are important for the understanding of the molecular ordering, where e.g. single molecular trapping may be observed. In this context it is important to realize that the two sp2 layer systems are stable at air and liquids and therefore fulfill an important requirement for possible applications in nanoscience and technology. It is the goal of this institutional partnership to explore the capabilities of these two kin, though not identical substrate systems, with respect to molecular self-assembly. The exploration of supramolecular architectures asks for a systematic investigation, paired with intuition from different fields. Finally, the "new materials" or molecular complexes on top of these sp2 templates shall be further exploited in devices, like molecular sensors. |
