Title / Titel Change of Use. A Comparative Ethnography of the Interactions Between Buildings and Society
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Umnutzung. Eine vergleichende Ethnographie der Interaktion von Gebäuden und Gesellschaft
Summary / Zusammenfassung The research project „change of use“ explores the relationship between society and buildings. Since the 1970ies „change of use“ or „adaptive re-use“ of buildings has become increasingly prominent in architectural and public discourses. The built structures of society are less and less planned from scratch and are increasingly built into pre-existing structures. Change of use today is furthermore structured by law and changing professional practices. Change of use poses the question how buildings and society relate to each other, and how different professions change our perception of buildings.
The research project compares practices of change of use in different countries and for different building types. Ethnographic case studies of buildings in Zürich, Stuttgart and Montreal shall be conducted. In these case studies, architects, clients and monument protection officials and users of buildings are interviewed and observed about their practical experiences. Furthermore, for each location „cultures of change of use“ are explored by highlighting different cultural, judicial, typological and historical ways of dealing with change of use.
The central questions are as follows: How does change of use work? How is it possible to conceptualise change of use in social theory? What is specific in change of use for specific building types? Which building types are restricted in change of use and why (for example religious buildings or prisons). Which images of buildings are produced through change of use? How is change of use represented in building and zoning law? How did the architectural profession change through the pervasive practices of change of use? The research project connects approaches from ethnography, science studies and architectural theory.
