| Summary / Zusammenfassung | In the third epeisodion of the Troades Euripides presents a verbal battle between the characters Helena and Hecuba. In this agon the former tries to justify her adultery committed with Paris by depicting herself as manipulated by divine will, while Hecuba attempts to defend the gods against such accusations and to explain hers opponent's misconduct as a result of individual flaw. The type of defence deployed by Helena is classified by various scholars as 'Homeric'. The most popular scene in that a Homeric character applies a comparable tactic of exculpation is the apology of Agamemnon in the 19th book of the Iliad. The aim of this dissertation is to examine in what way each of the two apologies corresponds with the plot-premises of the particular opus where it belongs to. | ||
